Pioneering a smarter way
to do data discovery.

Looker’s intuitive approach to data discovery makes the spread of a curiosity-driven culture both efficient and effective. An intuitive, web-based interface enables business users to tap into the genius of your data analytics team. They can build and share reports on the fly, so other functional groups can benefit from the questions they’re asking and the knowledge they’ve created. And since the whole Looker experience delivers such satisfying results, they actually start looking to the data to drive their business decisions and activities.

At the heart of Looker data discovery is a new way to create these web-based experiences. Using an agile language called LookML, your data analysts can create mini-applications that add power and efficiencies to data exploration. The LookML syntax simplifies the development of robust models for any organization, while enhancing the capabilities of SQL. There’s no need to expend time and resources coding queries on an ad hoc basis or setting up complex BI software platforms. As if that’s not enough, the language-based approach results in faster query execution, optimizing performance along the way.

"What’s great about Looker is that we can pass down what we learn to people who may not be familiar with even what SQL is or what an analytics service does."

—Colin Zima, Head of Data Science, HotelTonight

Data Discovery

With a Looker model of your data, your entire organization can benefit from the knowledge of the data analyst or data scientist. Users in any function can create simple or complex views of their data on the fly—without having to know SQL—accessing the data they need in real time and collaborating on the discovery of critical business information. They can drill into any data, across all fields and tables to find the insights they need to make decisions.

  • Curiosity-driven experience of all your business data, from a single application
  • Browser-based interface and customizable dashboards, available on any device
  • Ability to move quickly from wide-angle to extreme detail views, and to drill down on any chart
  • Powerful data tools, such as pivoting, contextual filtering, sequencing, and cohort tiering
  • Ad hoc query-builder for exploration of any model
  • Wide set of visualizations, including scatter, table, bar, and line charts

Sharing and Collaboration

Collaboration is at the heart of Looker data discovery. Advanced features empower your users to share discoveries—using their choice of applications—for the best-possible collaboration. And since Looker provides a single data model that powers all saved and shared insights, you can be confident your entire organization will be working with the same values and the same field definitions.

  • Time- and activity-based email subscriptions
  • User bookmarks, shareable via URLs
  • Real-time integration with Google Docs, Microsoft Excel, and other business applications, including your own custom applications
  • Manual export in csv, text, or JSON

Data Modeling

With Looker’s powerful language, LookML, analysts can develop complex analytical models for your business, while managing model files from the same application as your data-discovery and administration tools. An integrated development environment enables them to maintain and embellish model files easily. They can create dimensions, metrics, and additional views or incorporate new database tables—adapting analytics as quickly as your organization demands.

  • Powerful LookML modeling language
  • Browser-based IDE for agile modeling and development
  • GitHub integration for collaborative development by small and large analyst teams
  • Model generator and SQL tool for increased efficiencies and in-browser development
  • Full web services API and application SDK for building custom applications or integrating into
    another BI workflow

Management and Administration

Looker features full, web-based account and user administration tools, so your BI and IT teams can set up and manage the platform within the same browser-based application. User controls ensure your organization can turn on access quickly, while filtering data by user—so the right data is in the hands of the right people. With Looker, it's easy to build custom structures of data access and user experience. For example, you can build a simple model for global account managers and filter data specifically by each user’s region, and also build an advanced model for a team of analysts and executives making complex decisions about your business’ direction

  • In-app user management and comprehensive permissioning
  • Live integration with any SQL databases, including MPP, in-memory, and columnar systems, as well as with Hadoop via SQL interfaces such as Hive
  • Database connection management tools
  • Advanced monitoring of sharing and reporting activities, to ensure data doesn’t go
    where it shouldn’t

Installation and Support

Looker was designed to fit your existing environment and can be installed easily on any infrastructure—cloud, hosted, or on-premise. Once installed, we train your BI staff how to manage and embellish models. Since we use SQL, and not a proprietary query language, training time is typically very short. We also train business users how to perform data discovery—and provide as many training sessions as your entire organization requires.

  • Connections with any SQL database—such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Vertica, Redshift, Netezza, Hive, and Pivotal/Greenplum—and settings for external applications
  • Lightweight installation—Linux, Java, and Git
  • Unlimited upgrades and maintenance
  • Unlimited analytical support via in-application chat

All customers have direct access to our Analytics Support organization. You may submit cases regarding anything from setup problems to analytical questions, and we’ll ensure your success.
